Role & Responsibilities

Apart from bringing prestige, the role of the journal’s Advisory Board is to act as an advocate and ambassador for the journal; assist the Editor solicit/advance submissions; advise and support the Editor; as well as safeguard the journal’s reputation.

A Board member’s other honorary responsibilities also include the following:

In key or current new areas (or indeed weak areas in the journal), for example, target specific speakers/scholars at university level or at conferences/events to contribute to the journal.

  • Share the journal’s ‘Call for Papers (CfP)’ or other important announcements from the journal as widely as possible.
  • Promote the journal whenever possible to attract submissions for publication.
  • Identify topics for special issues (apart from the annual issue), which a Board member may be interested in publishing from the journal’s platform and guest editing.
  • Recommend the journal to relevant institutional libraries.
  • Encourage local libraries to subscribe to the journal.
  • Promote the journal to colleagues and peers.
  • Let the editorial team know of conferences/events that could be used as journal promotion opportunities
  • Subject expert Board members are a journal’s eyes and ears in that area and can alert the Editor to changes or new topics that may be incorporated into the journal’s scope.
  • Provide ideas to help determine which other formats the journal may consider exploring, e.g., given so many online developments from open-access, blogs, video clips, e-letters etc., the Board can provide useful feedback on such Non-Traditional Research Outputs (NTROs).

Provide feedback on the following questions:

  • What is good about the journal and what isn’t?
  • How does it compare with the other journals in the field?
  • What needs to change? What needs to continue?
  • What papers do they enjoy reading or look for in the journal?
  • What do they associate with the journal?
  • Assist in locating suitable peer reviewers, if required.
  • Assist the Editor in decision-making over issues such as plagiarism or authorship claims.
  • Act as a trusted ‘tie-breaker’ reviewer on articles where Editor has received split opinions from referees.

A Board meeting is a useful opportunity to discuss the highs and lows of the journal as well as get feedback on current content and strategy and input into future direction, competition, and priorities. This is done on annual basis either in-person (for which the Centre for Aerospace & Security Studies will bear travel and hospitality costs), or via telephone or online video conferencing.
